Math Games
Penny Dice Game
Partners pool together 20 (or more) pennies. They take turns rolling the die and picking up as many pennies as indicated on the die until all of the pennies have been picked up. To pick up the last pennies, the number on the die must match the number of pennies remaining. The player with the more pennies wins the game.
Top-it
This game is for two players. You can use a regular deck of cards, just remove the J,Q,K and A cards. Each player takes a card from the top of the pile, turns it over and says the number on the card. The player who has the larger number takes both cards. If the two cards show the same number, each player takes another card from the top of the pile. The player with the larger number then takes all of the cards facing up. The game is over when all of the cards have been taken. They player with more cards wins!
Two-Fisted Penny Addition
Players count out 10 pennies, then split them between their two hands. (Help children identify their left and right hands.) Players share their amounts. For example: my left hand has 1 and my right hand has 9; left hand 3 and right hand 7; left hand 4 and right hand 6; left hand 5 and right hand 5. The various splits for any given number can be recorded on paper. It is important that students recognize the two numbers that go together to make ten.
